Architecture has traditionally been associated with mortar and bricks, bringing an architect’s vision to fruition. While it is still a strong necessity to construct houses and buildings with these materials, there’s however room for innovation. Keeping in mind the growing need to help the environment, a cafe in Mumbai named, Cardboard Cafe has been created. Yes, you guessed it right- ENTIRELY out of recycled cardboard, barring the kitchen because obviously you do not want to be a roast along with the chicken! It is India’s first cardboard cafe located in the busy Bandra Kurla Complex, and you can rightfully call it ‘out of the box’ thinking. Anything you touch or see in this cafe is made of cardboard. Nuru Karim an architect at NUDES is the brilliant mind behind this unusual yet thoughtful construction. One must wonder how sturdy and dependable is this material. You’d be surprised that cardboard is 100% recyclable and renewable and is made up of 50% air. It is also an excellent sound absorption, so all you lovers out there can possibly create your own cardboard getaway homes soon! Not to forget, it is cost effective as well. The total time taken to create this cafe was seven and a half months: four months for prototyping and the remaining to build the space.
What's cooking in the kitchen? Try their ‘four way’ hummus platter which comes highly recommended, along with other options in Spanish, Continental, American and Asian delicacies that are on their menu. Also, their bar is well stocked, leaving no room for disappointment on a much needed evening out with friends.
But, Ranak, what happens if I am a messy eater and stain the table? Worry not! These guys did a thorough research and prototyping to create this cafe. The tables are wax laminated so that you do not have to resort to a walk of shame on your way out! We all know how picky we are about visiting eating joints nowadays. It is true that food served is important but it is not the only deciding factor anymore, ambience is too a consideration. So, it would not be a stretch to say that the cafe receives a good footfall, primarily out of curiosity. It is not everyday that you get to eat inside a cardboard constructed cafe. If you are ever in Mumbai, then you must visit the Cardboard Cafe to envelope yourself in a space that is beautifully designed through innovation of a sound creative mind and owned by individuals that are doing their two bits for the environment.
