Dogs are everybody's weakness. We have enough people who chant #dogsoverhumans to populate a whole planet but how many of us are doing something with these feelings of cute aggression that we have? There are times when I carry biscuits on me so that I can spend some time with some wagging tails; they do not ask for much apart from some friendly petting and watching their eyes squint in bliss is beautiful. However, it's also a real fact that the runts of the litters are left behind whilst the supposedly robust doggos get homes. But not always, right?
Recently I came across this story of a 6-week-old Labrador mix puppy that was dumped at the NFR Maine Animal Shelter in North Manmouth. He was probably left behind because he’s deaf and was suffering from seizures and severe canine parvovirus, which is pretty lethal. Parvo is every new dog owner’s nightmare. While life was being hard for this puppy, he chose to fight it out and survived through his illnesses. Shortly thereafter when Emerson was put up for adoption by the shelter, 31-year-old Nick Abott rose to the occasion and applied to adopt him.
The shelter felt it was a match made in heaven because in their first meeting Emerson made a beeline for Nick and sat at his feet. Isn’t that what love at first sight is?! Nick felt that since he and Emerson both share hearing difficulties, they would be able to bond better than many of the other applicants who wanted to adopt him.
You know what makes this story even more interesting? Emerson has learnt sign language from Nick! Yes! Emerson is taking his training seriously and can now sit, stand, lay down and come while my own dog wouldn’t drop the dirty tissue he snatches! But that what dogs are, they’re babies and will always love you no matter what or who you are. Discrimination is not in their DNA and this is what makes them so selfless. If you are looking for a puppy please adopt and check shelters in your area.
